There are several online resources for depression screening.

By using one or all of them you can have some basic idea.

Change of appetite
Change of sleeping patterns, sleeping more or less
Not doing things you used to do/becoming withdrawn and being bored
Fatigue
Doing the little things become harder
Anxiety
You feel guilty for being a burden and feel like a failure
You look at the negative most of the time and can't think clearly.
You feel lost in this world and life is passing you by.
Unexplained physical pains, headaches, back pain etc.
Change in personal hygiene and appearance
Crying easily, feeling alone.

The doctor can do blood tests to see if there are physical reasons why a person may be depressed, i.e a chemical imbalance in the brain. Depression does not neccessarily have to be treated with medication though. A psychologist can work through the feelings and work with the person to improve.
Also, there are lots of websites with information on depression.

Anxiety & Depression are very much interrelated. Prolonged anxiety with a sense of HOPELESSNESS causes depression.

Anti-depressant is not a solution at all. In fact it worsens the situation making you dependent on it.

The BEST way is to immerse yourself in something that really fascinates you viz. a hobby, sports, just anything that you are passionate about. And see the result. Simultaneously you have to make minor alteration in your dietary habits.

A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any magic pill.

bostonchick and John L provide solid guidance.
When I was telling my friends I had been diagnosed with depression, a couple of them said they'd seen signs that something was wrong but weren't sure they should tell me. I'm glad you're there to help this person out.

The answer to your question is both. You've just heard it wrong, or actually, someone probably told you wrong. Medical depression is referred to that ONLY when depression is present when coping with a medical condition. Such as Epilepsy, Diabetes, Alcoholism.etc. The symptoms are similar but not to a severe degree as in those who suffer from it psychologically. Prescription medications can be given, but since it isn't a long lasting, going outside, or as you said finding an activity can get your mind off of the medical condition that is making you feel depressed.

Psychological depression interferes with a persons day to day life and isn't something that can be cured by just doing something else to 'snap out of it' . Since it affects the chemistry in the brain, and isn't something brought on by a medical condition, prescriptions are a must with this type of depression.

Being really bored actually can cause depression, but usually there is an underlying issue. Say for instance you are under house arrest and can't go anywhere. The internet and t.v. are going to get to you pretty quickly, so you end up depressed because you can't do anything. This type of depression is basically the same as the medical depression, doing something thought provoking or out in the sunlight can cure it right up.

I hope I helped!

According to the diagnostic and statistical manual IV, "Major depression" is classified as at least 5 out of the 9 symptoms, one of which must be:

1/ Feeling depressed/down
or
2/ Feeling like nothing interests you anymore - even things that you used to like doing

for most of the day, for most days of the week

The other 7 symptoms are:
Fatigue
Poor attention
Change in appetite/weight
Sleep changes (sleeping more or sleeping less with or without early morning wakening)
Everything slows down (the person moves slower, speaks slower, etc.)
Feeling excessively guilty / at fault / worthless
Suicidal thoughts/thoughts that life isn't worth living

Yes it is true that there are side effects to the medications, but if the person is quite depressed that it's affecting their life substantially, medications might be needed - if only to help them pick themselves up again.

This is especially the case if suicidal thoughts are involved as their safety is of significant importance.

However, one thing you need to keep in mind is that these medications take a long time to work.. at least 6 weeks for them to start to feel better. They may even feel worse after a week or 2. They also need to continue the medications for 12 months for it to be effective.

Counseling might be an option initially if the person you're talking about is wary about taking drugs and worried about their side effects, but if there is any indication of suicidal ideation, it could be quite serious and counseling might not be enough. All the best!

It's my guess that it starts in the psyche & of prolonged becomes medical b/c if the afffect on the brain.

Like when you keep thinking about things that affect your emotions it eventually changes the brain chemistry b/c of the continual hormones the thoughts produce.

Boredom could lead to dissatisfaction with your life causing thoughts that change your brain.

My advice would be to keep a self-examined life. At the start of depression, get out in the sun shine, take walks , etc. to try to combat a mental thing B4 it becomes physical needing medication.

I've met a lot of abused people who did not want to go on medication for their depression in adjuct to counseling. I'd try to explain that their mind & body has been in emergency mode for so long that they don't know what normal is anymore. Consider the medication as emergency treatment just until the counseling helps you come to grips with the trauma and you can start doing more for yourself & less with the drugs.

That's why I think it begins as mental & then turns physical, generally. I'm not talking about severe head traumas that can effect thinking. In which case it would be the oposite of above hypothesis.
